Dr. O

My 8 yr old arab has been DrOpping his penis allot lately. I cleaned his sheath last weekend but did not find a bean. I just read your article on cleaning and finding it so I'll try again tomorrow. My concern is that it seems like his sheath is swollen. Could the possibility of a bean cause swelling of the sheath? His penis seems normal and he doesn't seem to strain at all when he urinates. He has not been exercised very much lately between my schedule and more attention given to my mare. Could it be due to lack of exercise? He has gained some extra weight lately and we are cutting down on his feed. He has a nice corral area and is not stuck in a stall, however with the heat he is not as active either.
Your advice is most welcome.

Thanks, Lisa

Hello Lisa,
The sheath is a common place for fat to accumulate. The difference between inflammation and fat would be does the swelling pit? For a description of this see, Diseases of Horses » Skin Diseases » Swellings / Localized Infection / Abscesses » Diagnosing and Assessing Swellings in Horses.

Sometimes a sheath can swell due to insect bites. Is the swelling bilateral? If so, maybe it isn't insects
