Discussion on Rhodococcus in a septic hock
Author Message

Posted on Friday, Sep 8, 2000 - 11:49 pm:

I have a 7-week-old Arabian filly who went through orthoscopic surgery for a swollen hock. The infection cultures out as rhodococcus which is shocking as this bacteria is seen in pneumonia. This filly has clear lungs, is eating and acting normal except is running a temp of 103. Was originally diagnosed as joint ill even though the navel shows no signs of infection. Was treated with amikacin and nexel with no luck. Then when the culture came back today with the diagnosis of rhodococcus, the medication was switched to erthyromycin and rifampin.

Have you ever seen this condition? What will be the possible outcome?
