I have a horse, a 5 yr old gelding, with a sarcoid. It is located over his eye, & didn't really cause him any problem. My vet recommended, injecting it, I don't know the name of the drug. This was done 2 weeks ago, since then, it has swolen & is much larger. His eye does not open the whole way, because of the swelling. Does anyone recommend a treatment for this?

The reaction is pretty normal to the commonly used Sarcoid treatment Regressin. Usually I do not recommend treatment as the swelling represents the way in which the body rejects the tumor. However being around the eye I might be a little more aggressive. If the eye itslef is showing any signs of inflammation: cloudines, reddness, or discharge I would start some bute if your vet agrees.

Dr. O

This link shows a growth over my horses eye. My vet has looked at it and doesn't know what it is.
I'm afraid it's a sarcoid. Can you tell by looking at the photos?

Cheryl,
Yes, it looks like one but that is not proof. What is the history of this lesion?

Dr. O
Sorry about my misunderstanding for posting. Will do better next time.

Andy is a 3 year old walking horse stallion. He is a bay tobiano. The lesion appeared about a year and a half to two years ago (to the best of my recollection). It appeared smaller at first, like a scuff mark above his eye. It started more towards the inner portion of his eye and has slowly spread to the outside. There is no drainage, no pain and no itching. In the last month or six weeks, a secondary lesion, about the size of a pea and raised, has cropped up within the exisiting lesion. It is located towards the top of the lesion. At this point, I am unsure whether or not the secondary lesion is increasing in size, since it was only recently observed. He has no other known lesions of this nature on his body.

Thanks,
Cheryl

The history supports sarcoid also I am afraid. the Sarcoid article was updated just last month to help treat and prognosticate on type and location it should help.

Thanks, Dr. O. I was afraid of that too and I have been reading. May be back with more questions later.

Dr. O

I've read all the articles, was trying to find an explaination for teletherapy and was unable to do so. If it's here can you direct me to it, if it's not would you please tell me what it is and how it is done. The treatment table indicates it is one of the better treatments for the occult and verrucous. I think Andy's sarcoid is an occult turning into a verrucous.
Or is there a treatment you would prefer, given the location of the tumor is so close to his eye?

Thanks,
Cheryl

My apologies Cheryl, I have edited the article to explain this type treatment. See under radiation for an explanation.

Thanks Dr. O - So it's just another form of radiation therapy. Andy will be going to University of Tennessee on the 24th for radiation therapy. It seems to give the best odds for treating a sarcoid this close to the eye. Will let you know the out-come.
