Discussion on Pemphius in 5 month old Mini
Author Message

Posted on Thursday, Oct 26, 2000 - 7:54 pm:

My friends have a 5 month old Mini who has the classic symptoms of Pemphigus. Some biopsies were taken today and are being sent to Cornell for analysis. Our veterinarian gave a prognosis of fair to good for the foal. She said that it was good that he was so young as younger horses seem to respond better to treatment and can, sometimes, reverse the condition.

I was wondering if Dr. O or anyone else had any information on whether age can be a factor and if it can improve "outcome?" Are we being unrealistic in hoping for him to recover? If he doesn't respond to treatment, how rapidly can/does the disease progress?

Thank you for any information you can provide.

Karen

The prognosis will depend on the type pemphigus the horse has: foliaceus or bullous. Let's wait until the biopsy comes back and we will hope for the best till then.
