Discussion on Long drawn out cough?

I borrowed a horse for the winter to keep my horse company until I can afford to buy another. After I've been riding him for awhile, he makes this long, drawn out sound, like he is "grunting", but without the vocal cords (hard for me to describe). It can last for several seconds. Sometimes he will snort afterwards. I've been around horses for less than a year and I don't have a clue. My question is- is that a cough? Do I need to have it checked by a vet? The farrier said, "some horses do that".

A classic example of the limitation of diagnosis by Net: you can hear it but all we get is your description. See the problem? Wendy if it worries you have a vet look at it. I tried putting my sethascope against the screen with your post up on it but all I get is something that sounds like the Yes albums I listened to in the 60's.

Yes, many horses give a little hard to describe snort and grunt when ridden but how that applies to your horse I have not a clue.

Thanks anyway- I was hoping my description was all you would need to "hear" for an easy diagnosis. :)
