Is this possible in a cold climate and what is the incubation period?

Hello J.,
Concerning incubation period, in reality we are not sure in the case of natural infection. We have just worked out in the last 6 months the probable life cycle of this organism. The problem we have now is everytime we turn around we find that this life cycle is a little more complicated than the usual disease organism (see Equine Diseases: Colic and GI Diseases: Diarrhea in Horses: Potomac Horse Fever for details of this).

We are still not sure exactly which organism(s) are responsible for the transmission to the horse and then how long it takes to develop clinical signs. Following oral administration of the organism horses tend to become ill within a week experimentally. The incidence of active PHF infections in horses during the winter is unknown but appears to be nill.
