A goose egg sized lump appeared on my horse's side a little over a week ago. My vet diagnosed it as a hematoma and open it and removed lots of blood clots. The horse was on SMZ's and banamine for several days. I have been using the same hosing treatment (as directed by my vet) that you describe in your section on open wounds. I am also using Nolvasan. Betadyne has also been part of my routine. Should I continue with that? You mentioned several remedies like peroxide that are not helpful and I was wondering if continued use of the
Betadyne is warranted. The wound looks clean and is beginning to shrink. It is uncovered. Thank you for keeping me from badgering my vet.

I would choose either the chlorhexidine (Nolvasan) or the povidone (Betadine) but not both.
