I have been wrapping a cut to my mares leg for a few weeks now. Just an uncomplicated cut to the front of her cannon.
About 1 week ago I forgot to tape the velcro and she pulled the wrap off in her pasture. It was a no bow with a bandage over it. I think during the process of the wrap coming off, she gave herself a "rope burn" on the back of her cannon from the wraps. I noticed that the blood vessel that crosses the back of her tendon was a little large.
Now after about a week, it is even larger and has some heat. She is completly sound but does not like me pushing on the distended vessel. When I palpate it, it does not move with the skin and is not attached to the tendon. I am fairly confident that it is isolated to that vessel.
Besides putting cold on it, what kind of treatment should I be doing and what are the possible complications with this type of injury.

Hello Shelly,
If you believe the area is mildly bruised, and suggested because there is no lameness, it should clear up on its own with time. It you would like to treat it cold therapy as described in Diseases of Horses » First Aid » Pressure Wraps, Poultices, Cold and Heat Therapy for Swelling in Horse Legs would be logical.
