Discussion on Rocky Mountain Horses and ASD
Author Message

I'm looking for as much information on ASD in the Rocky Mountain Horse. I realize it's a genetic defect, but how many ways can it manifest itself?
Is moonblindness a symptom? This horse is a four year old mare with no history of eye trauma.

Hello John
see, Equine Diseases: Eye Diseases: Forum: Anterior Segment Dysgenesis (ASD) in horses. There is a very complete discussion on this problem.

If you havent been there yet, go to www.gaitedhorse.com
There are links to some good info on ASD and the RMH
From what I have learned, moon-blindness is not generally a symptom, but is a seperate condition all together. ASD usually manifests itself in the form of cysts the form in the eye, this is considered the most recognizable symptom. It can normally only be diagnosed by a certified Equine Opthamologist,as it requires training in what to look for to recognize the desease. The majority of horses that have this condition suffer no loss of sight or impairment except in teh extreme cases.
The largest concern in dealing wiht ASD is froma breeding standpoint, you would not want to breed a horse diagnosed as a carrier.
hope this has helped!
