A friend of mine has a 3 yr old gelding that runs a fever and looses weight each fall as soon as we get the first frost. He has done this every winter. The vets have done extensive tests on the horse but haven't come up with anything. Right now they think it could be ulcers, can ulcers case a fever? This fever seems to be to be season related, has anyone has similar experiences?

Hello Kim,
Yes severe ulcers might cause a low grade fever but this is not a common finding with them.

DrO, out of couriosity, would it be possible for a horse to over compensate for the change in weather and up its body temp and metabolism as a result thus resulting in weight loss?
I could be talking imaginary fairy tails but it was just one of those sidways ideas.

While when the weather first turns warm horses temperature will run a degree high it will not result in weight loss: he will require less energy to stay warm. Of course around here when things warm up a little, those poor sofe pudge balls in the pasture are asked to do a little more.
