Discussion on Redness of the sclera
Author Message

Posted on Sunday, Mar 4, 2001 - 2:27 pm:

For the past few months I've been noticing that the color of the sclera in all of my horses (four) has gradually changed from perfectly white to reddish. With the exception of one (recently purchased) none of them have any other symptoms indicative of eye disease (no swelling, squinting or discharge). The problem started before the new guy joined the herd, but some time ago I noticed the same problem in my neighbor's horses (across the fence). Are there any transmittable eye diseases that do not produce symptoms other than the redness? Could it be a symptom of something systemic (not strictly eye-related)? My vet doesn't seem interested in this, and my vet books are not of much help, either.

Hello Beata, without looking at your horses I do not know but local irritation is the most likely explanation. If you cannot get your questions answered from the person who is looking at your horses, I would find a vet who is more interested in my concerns.

Beata...you didn't say what kind of horses you had but this happens alot to my Appys when there is snow on the ground, the glare, I guess. I put masks on my two during the day and take it off at night. Really helps with the redness...now, if it goes beyond that, swelling, etc. I have some opthalmic eye ointment that I got from the vet that I use for about 3 days and it seems to do an excellent job!! Good luck, Yvonne

The ointment is probably a steroid or antibiotic steroid mix. We discuss this and other causes of eye irritation in the article associated with this forum.
