DrO:
I have recently came across an advertisement in Jeffers catalog for, "Equiopathics All-Natural Dewormer" It contains Granatum 3c,Kamala 3c, Chenopodium Anthelminticum 3c, and Filix Mas 3c
It is supposed to provide relief from round worm, tapeworm or hookworm. It is to be given by mouth 2 ml 3 times daily for 20 days. I have never heard of these wormers and 3 times a days for 20 days seems like a lot of wormer/work. Would this product be effective and if so are there any circumstances where its use would be indicated?

Hello Betty,
I can find no information on the use of these substances an an anthelmininc (dewormer) in horses. Checking my PDR I can find Chenopodium ambrodsioides which has been used as a human anthelminic. There is no information on efficacy but it does say at therapeutic levels it is quite toxic resulting is spasims, paralysis, hemmorage o the meninges, and buzzing in the ears that may last for years. Hmmmm...

I notice that the ingredient terminology you list above appear to be allopathic in nature: These are extracts that are so dilute as to be devoid of active ingredients but are suppose to work through molecular spin theories that have no basis in science as it is currently understood.

Thank you Dr.O
I wonder how a national catalog can advertise such a thing to unsuspecting horse owners. I certainly won't try it. (I have just switched my horses over to your recommended worming schedule after checking with my vet about it)Thanks for a great site. I am having a wonderful time being a member.

This sounds like a homeopathic - the tip off is the 3c following each ingredient.

Based on that dilution, I doubt the item is harmful to the horse.

However, I would be skeptical about its worming properties. Homeopathics are intended to trigger the body's own natural healing response by introducing a very small amount of successively sucussed and diluted mixture designed to mimic the problem. In turn, the body's natural defenses are provoked. So, if you had hives, you might use rhus tox 6x to encourage your body to respond to the hives. I'm not convinced an itch/bump response is the same as a parasite response, though ... If you were to study the product, you could do a fecal, use the product and do another fecal to determine its effectiveness.

The worms it lists are a smallish subset of what a horse is normally wormed for ... so I'd stick with a conventional program that has a broader action, even if I thought this was effective.
