Dr O,

My ten year old mare, who is my dressage horse is showing stiffness in her right hind leg. She warms out of it and is fine. She isnt lame however I was wondering if a shot of adequan or ? might help her. Is a maintenance shot of this stuff or something similar better than glucosamine?

It depends on what is wrong Hally, though you wish to call it a stiffness you describe mild transient lameness that the horse warms out of. Without knowing the cause of the stiffness it is impossible to say what will definitely help. Often such problems in the back leg are early arthritis of the hocks. If you wish to try out some empirical therapy you should check out that article Diseases of Horses » Lameness » Joint & Bone Diseases » Arthritis and DJD: An Overview.

Better however is to get a diagnosis see, Diseases of Horses » Lameness » Localizing Lameness in the Horse.
