'''Ann, there are forms of chronic bilateral hind limb suspensory desmitis that are thought to be hereditary. Unless it is clear this is not the case she would not be recommended for breeding.

Dr. O I moved this discussion.. My question to you is how do you know if this is hereditary? The lameness vet said nothing nor did the ultrasound lady, Carol.. And what would I look for on my 3 year old filly out of her?? The right hind leg 'blow out' happened on a trail ride.. Carol did say that she sees this kind of injury on our big arena horses often, that they are not conditioned for such terrain and the size of them , well they are heavy..

Thanks ..

I have an article somewhere around here already started on what is called Degenerative Suspensory Ligament Disease, which is the chronic form. I will get it up next week and it should help answer your questions.

Yes but without success Ann. It still needs to be put up, let me see what I can get done next week. In the meantime check out the topic Diseases of Horses: Lameness: Diseases of the Lower Limb: Degenerative Suspensory Ligament Disease, where this disease is discussed. While a significant problem in Peruvians, other breeds are effected at what some have calculated if I remember correctly at a rate of around 0.1 to 1.0%.

I know you have been waiting Ann but I continue to have trouble getting this to the top of my to do list. Other projects already on the list and most importantly a recent upgrade to our software unexpected required we move the whole sites directory structure. We have been working on this for the last month and we will make the actual move this coming week. Hopefully when this gets done I will have time to research and write this. My apologies for the delay.

Well now Ann, I hope it is worth the wait you will find the article in the section of lower limb lameness.
