Last night I found a wound on my horse's heel, just about an inch long, just above the coronet. It looks more like a crack than a cut. There is no bleeding or draining, but the leg is swollen mid way up the leg, and there is swelling at the site. I hosed it, cleaned the wound with Betadine, and gave him Bute, but the swelling has not subsided. The wound looks like nothing, but the swelling makes me suspicious. I can't find evidence of a puncture, but I don't know for sure. My vet can't come until tomorrow. Do you think I should start him on Penicillin ( I just bought some G Procaine from the feed store, before I read your post about not being hasty with antibiotics. He doesn't seem to mind it much now.

I would take his temperature to help make this decision Cindy, if there is remarkable fever I would discuss with my vet by phone the possibility. For more on taking temperature see Diseases of Horses » First Aid » Taking Temperature, Pulse, and Respiration.
