  Discussion on DMSO--How to obtain
Author Message

Posted on Wednesday, May 1, 2002 - 12:06 am:

I have a roll on bottle of DMSO that I bought at a tack shop.

It is 99% pure DMSO. Is it safe to use on my horse or should I get a different grade from somewhere else?

My mare has a big kick mark on her butt with a 5 inch diameter raised hematoma type swelling. I was going to put on DMSO but then just thought I'd let nature heal it.

She is also arthritic in her front foot and is getting injected on Friday, (did nerve blocks last Friday). Would topical DMSO be a good
addition to our efforts in getting her sound?

Thanks.

This site is invaluable.

Hello Dorthea,
Thank you for the KUDO's. 99% is the standard concentration sold for medical use but I cannot speak for the bottle that you bought or course. Whether you should use it and how to use it should be a question directed at your veterinarian and depends on the diagnosis and location of the lesion.

We do have an article on DMSO that explains its use and precautions at, Equine Medications and Nutriceuticals: Anti-inflammatories, Steroids, and Arthritis Treatment: DMSO. But since you are in the right forum you may have read it already.
