-Sorry posted this at the end of another thread. Doing it right this time.--------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----
My mare had a very swollen eye last Fri. Almost swollen shut, alot of mucous and she had been rubbing it on her knee. Had the vet out, no corneal abrasions, F.B. or eyelid injury. Since we couldn't be sure if it were infection or contusion causing the swelling, we treated with benamine (injection and 3 days of paste), topical antibiotic/steroid ung. and injection of Pen G and 4 days of Trimethoprin Sulfa. The eye started improving within 12 hours and had almost no swelling 24 hrs. later. I continued with the ung for a week to be safe. Though her eye looks great, she now has soft manure. I started using Fastrack probiotics 3 days ago and although the manure doesn't look like cow paddies any more it still isn't normal. Is this normal? How long will it take to get back to normal? She gets 1 lb wet (warm water) shreded beetpulp, a flax seed supplement with biotin and glucosomine and free choice good grass hay and 24 hour turnout with my gelding. I have been adding the probiotic at its recommended dosage split between the two feedings. Is this sufficient or should I up the dosage or use something else? Any other suggestions? Thanks,

Anna

Hello Anna,
No doubt about it antibiotics can cause diarrhea do to the change in gut flora. Just give it some time, continue with a regular diet, and things usually return to normal in a couple of weeks. The efficacy of the probiotic is uncertain and improvement recently may have been in spite of and not because of.

Dr. O,
Thanks for the info. I was to do my regulr worming today. I was thinking it might be best to wait. Should I wait until the manure is back to normal or go ahead and worm on schedule?
Don't want to turn a little problem into a bigger problem.

If the deworming has been good prior to this you could wait a little while.
