Are there any contraindications of hyperactivity associated with bute? My vet put my 8 yo quarter horse on bute due to an injury, he stifled, and has been on 2 gms twice daily for 3 days and then 1 gm twice daily for two weeks. Just after being on the bute for 3 days, he is a completely different horse. Rearing up, kicking and bucking. When trying to walk him he pulled away and ran all over the barn for a good 2 minutes. Has anyone else had this type of experience with bute?

Have there been other changes like increase time in the stall or a different routine?

There hasn't been anyother changes, 30 minutes in the field and walking for 20 minutes. The only other change that I can think of is that the weather here in Tucson, AZ has been getting cooler at night with some rain. His behavior is just out of character for him. He seemed calmer this morning, but I did not give him his bute. How long does bute stay in the system?

Karen, I also live in Tucson, nice to know someone else is here. As for Bute, my mare has been on 1 gram 2x daily for 1 1/2 years due to an adhesion on the flexor tendon, and shows no sign of behavior change. When my vet comes out to check for any apparently lameness she says, "no Bute that day", so apparently it don't stay too long in the system, but Dr. O. can probably give you the correct answer. Take care, Shirl

Bute is a drug with similar activity to aspirin. Just like aspirin there is very little that bute should effect from a psychological perspective. That is not to say your horse might not have a idiosyncratic reaction, others have reported such changes, but I have never witnessed such.
