I lost a mare with a one day old foal last week. After bottle feeding the colt for 4 days we found a mare that had lost her colt the day before. The mare was gentle but definetly did not want to accept my colt. My vet had me put the mare on a human drug (perphenazine) twice a day. At 48 hours after the use of this drug the mares lactation increased dramatically and she "took the colt" Has anyone else used this drug for this purpose?

Nedra though I have not used this drug (for our recommendations see the article on orphan foals) and have not seen safety studies in lactating mares, the properties of perphenazine make it a logical choice for this use.

Thanks for your reply. So far the mare and foal are doing well and will be weaned off of the medication by this weekend.

Thanks again,
