Are there any NSAID's or other anti-inflammatories that do not irritate the stomach lining? Are there stomach protectants that can be used concurrently with Bute if a horse has an ulcer?

Hello Diane,
First understand that NSAID's don't cause problems by directly irritating the lining: it is a pharmacological effect mediated through prostaglandins. For the treatment of ulcers including discussions on protectants see, Equine Diseases » Colic and GI Diseases » Gastric Ulcers.

Where can I find out more about the pharmacology of Bute then and how prostaglandins are involved? I have a mare that has been on a large dose of Bute for a while because of a serious founder episode. She has had blood tests for liver/kidney function and appeared to be tolerating it. However, I suspect that she is having some irritation of the stomach, maybe not ulcers yet but could be headed there. I have taken her off Bute but am looking for an alternative that would be easier on her stomach.

See Equine Medications and Nutriceuticals » Anti-inflammatories (NSAID's, Steroids, Arthritis Rx) » Phenylbutazone (Bute).
