I gave pumpkin the loading dose of Naproxen last night, this morning at 10, and then will give her another dose this afternoon at 4.
I plan on riding her about 8 tonight. If its in her system and working.
I talked with my walmart and they do have the generic naproxen 500mg for $4. Its 60 pills. So would be around 20 bucks a month. very inexpensive. I have been using the OTC for this first test run.

BTW last night I crushed the pills and put it on a handful of CALF Mana. She definately could taste it in powder form. Didnt like it.
This morning I left them whole and put on same amount of calf manna and she gobbled them down with the manna and couldnt tell. LOL

Whoot!
I just longe her and she is moving so good! Not gimpy at all. ( she was still a little gimpy on 2g of bute when longed). I am very pleased with the results of using the Naproxen on the days I ride (once or twice a month).

Sounds promising leslie, but to help those running across this posting explain what it is you are treating this way and exactly what dosage you are using.

Will do. And thanks DrO
Mare is grade 2 lame on RF due to Chronic heel pain SynDrOme. CHPS.
I ride her very lightly once or twice a month. She is green broke so she does get lunged for about 20 minutes.
This time I used generic Naproxen 220 mg OTC. The dosage I gave her was a loading dose 10mg/kg (2Xday). So for a 1000 lb horse it was 5000mg. I gave it to her the day before I rode and then also on the day I rode. That morning and then a couple of hours before I rode.
She is not in shoes ATM. So the naproxen is very helpful at this point.

Leslie,

Do you give that dose daily, or just on days you want to ride? The article says once or twice daily for up to 14 days.

Did you tell them at WM that you were buying this for a horse?

Anjie
I gave her the loading dose of 5000mg friday night, another 5000mg sat morning and another 5000mg later that same day(sat evening)--- before the ride. It worked great.
It does say for 14 days...sorta like bute is only supposed to be administered for so many days in a row...Although, some horses tolerate bute everyday for years. The naproxen is suppose to be tolerated better than bute. I guess it depends on the horse.
According to DrO - naproxen is naproxen whether otc or prescriotion, the only differencre (basically) is the MG's. So I used generic otc 220 mg's that were on sale. If you want to use the 500mg's then you need a script. I did ask walmart if they took vetrinarian prescriptions and they said "All the time". but I never bothered with getting a script when I could just buy it otc.
** I calculated by Mg's so for a 1000lb horse that would be 20 pills of OTC (220mg)naproxen.
**if you use the script it would be 10 pills (500mg's)for a thousand pound horse.

Heres a nice thread on it...that was posted in 2007.
