Hello, I have a 6 year old that has been diagnosed with IAD. I have done everything to help his environment (run in shelter, keep away from barn, arena and field dust and feed soaked cubes instead of hay). He seems to still have a hard time with spring time. I am assuming now it maybe pollen that is the culprit. Anyways, I haven't tried Alternative Day Therapy yet so I want to start before spring time starts up. I have treated him with dex in the past but, obviously since it maybe pollen in spring, it seems to have come back last year from April to August. I got prednisolone to start the therapy from my vet however, it is an IV/IM form of it. I saw in the article it mentions tablets given orally. Can you not use the IV/IM form?

Hi Jamie,

My horse, like yours has severe allergic reactions to things in his environment during the same time frame. In his case, it is bugs and specifically swarming gnats and weed pollen.

He acts like he has some sort of respiratory issue(nasal snoring and coughing) but when scoped nothing appears. During those same months he suffers from severe head shaking synDrOme which I resolved with a pretty unique get up that included a full face nose mask, a fly hood with ears and soundproof earplugs( see post below). He went from a horse that tried to throw himself to a perfect gentleman in one day( which was why I knew it worked).

I also keep him out of the field since I think some of his issue is pollen as well and it is the build up of the pollen and the swarming gnats that causes his reaction. If he is not exposed to the pollen or the bugs, he is much better and this is with no treatment.

What I am trying to say is that your horses problem may not be dust and you may be right about the pollen, but you also need to see if there are any areas where your horse may be encountering the same issues with the swarming gnats. I didn't even know that was the cause of most of my horses problem until I noticed he was worse in certain areas then others and that his coughing would start at exactly the same point in his daily work. Once I got his head gear figured out, he stopped coughing and was able to continue his exercise with no other issues.

Here is the thread I posted last year.

Good luck with your horse.

Welcome Jamie,
PO, IM,IV all will be effective with pred or dex. The question is what is easiest, with the fewest side effects? I believe oral admin is the answer.
