Dear Dr O,
I hope you may shed some light on this for me, my own vet couldn't explain it.

Not long after Cara started having phenobarbitone for her epilepsy her seasons stopped. She missed about 3 cycles and then restarted right on time as though nothing had happened.
When we raised her dose recently the cycles stopped again and have yet to restart. Although she shows no obvious outward signs, ie squirting and winking, her urine changes its nature as with a normal cycle and the geldings are quite interested in her. This week when she should have been in oestrus when I turned her out she headed straight for the only gelding in the field even though he is not one of her stable companions and she only knows him a little. She presented her rear to him but did nothing else. Later she returned to her girl-friends.
My vet has no idea why the phenobarbitone should block her cycles, have you?
Thanks,
Helen

Until determined by sequential palpation, it seems most likely that the changes you see are behavorial and not endocrinolgical. She is cycling but subtle changes in behavior account for the lack of interest.

Hi Dr O - here's an update- she came into season as normal last week and shamelessly tried to make up for what she had missed for the last few months including invading the stable of her boyfriend! I'd forgotten just how wanton she can be.
