I read your article about penicillin and wondered what you considered to be units. In the article you said that manufacturers recommened 3,000 units/lb but you recommended 10,000 units/lb twice daily. For my own future reference and use of penicillin, what do you consider units and could you relate that to CCs?

Hi Jennifer,
Not Dr.O, but I think I can help with this question. It will depend, of course, on how much the horse weighs, but for the sake of simplicity, let's use a 1,000 lb. example. On the bottle, it will say 300,000 IU/mL (International units per milliliter). A mL is the same as a cc. So...

(1,000 lb x 10,000 IU/lb)
------------------------- = about 33 mL's or cc's.
(300,000 IU/mL)

Hope this helps...

Aubrey

Thanks Aubreay and you are exactly right. But it is important to realize that not all bottles contain 300,000 IU of procaine penicillin per ml so the dose in cc's will differ from bottle to bottle. International Unit (IU) is a accepted convention among pharmaceutcal companies for measuring quantities of penicillin or any other drug.
