  Discussion on Pregnancy Clues

After a rectal palpitation, our vet declared our mare not pregnant.

She was inseminated 10 months ago, so she should be due in about one month.

We've seen signs (to us) that she is pregnant, such as: teats swollen and she seems to be bagging up, movement in her side just in front of her hips, and she hasn't shown signs of going into heat this Spring while our other mares have.

Do these seem like valid clues, or are we just hopelessly expectant?

Hello Richard

The signs you describe could be clues to a pregnancy, but they also might be a false pregnancy.

The only sure way to know is to have the mare ultrasounded.

I say this because my mare was declared "not in foal" 2 times by rectal palpation and both times she was pregnant. When she didn't come back into heat each time, I hauled her to a vet with an ultrasound and had her rechecked. Both times she was pregnant. I guess I could say 3 times now, because she was just checked in foal at 18 days last week (via ultrasound).

Good Luck

I hate to say it Richard but hopefully expectant describes a lot of folks I see with empty mares thought to be pregnant.

Heidi, if you have a vet who believes he can accurately detect pregnancy with a rectal palpation, before she returns to the next heat (before day 15) you need to find someone who knows more about mare reproductive events. This is not simple a lack of experience issue but a lack of knowledge issue.
