I have a Buckskin Paint colt that was born Sept.17,2002. I know that they loose their baby coat, but this seems different. First he seems a little young to be shedding that baby coat and second, it looks like there is no hair or some very fine patches coming in where he has lost it.I can't figure out what has caused this. I hope it isn't an allergy. He doesn't have a runny nose or anything. His eyes are bright and he plays and sleeps like a normal kid. Loves to be scratched and petted. It started on his legs, then moved to his chest and now his beautiful head. What do you think? Nancy

Read your article on hair loss. It may be the worm thing. Is he too young to worm? There are no crustations. The skin seems fine. His hair is just falling out. His mane and tail are fine. His teeth and hooves look fine too. So... I guess will worm everyone again and see what happens. Since this was about a foal, I thought this was the right forum. Thanks, Nancy

With the unusual time of birth you may be susceptible to unusual shedding times: does it not fit the foal shedding pattern described in the article? Does the skin look irritated? You can use ivermectin in a foal this young.
