Well, I may be in for a surprise. My mare, who I bought 10 months ago, is bagging up, her belly is DrOpping -- so that she's slightly ribby on the upper half of her rib cage -- and there's some ventral swelling. The swelling is equal on both sides, enough to fill the palm of my hand, and in a oval shape about 2-3 hands wide.

She was just barely 3 when I bought her and I didn't think to ask if she might possibly be pregnant.

The vet is coming Wednesday for an exam, but I'm going nuts waiting. Also, she was on two courses of metronidazole for diarrhea over the winter, and was treated in fall with banamine for a mild colic. Is there any reason to worry about these drugs if she's pregnant.

She's eating 3 flakes grass hay a day and about 1# 2/x day of mixed feed. I'll ask the vet about boosting her diet if she's pregnant, but she's in good flesh otherwise. She has a couple hours a day on grass, which is just coming in here.

Any comments and advice would be appreciated.

Hello Jerre,
Metronidazole is listed in the pharmocology texts as not recommended for pregnancy. There are no reports pro or con on its use in pregnant mares. There have been some reports of being a teratogen in lab animals. Looking at the recent human literature, opinions vary between "we do not know" and that "it is safe". I think this is not a problem, unless administered very early in pregnancy.

Thanks DrO,
The vet confirms -- she's pregnant! And probably due in the next two weeks.

The drug was administered in the 7-8 month, so we're probably OK there. What's a "teratogen?"

I'm reading everything about foaling on this site, and everywhere else I can find it! But the mare is large, healthy, and except for gradually increasing her grain and adding a general supplement, the vet had no advice except -- wait and let it happen!

Jerre, rather than just answer your question let me show you how to answer this yourself. On the navigation frame on the left you will find a topic labeled REFERENCE MENU. Select Medical Dictionary and you will be able to look at your word. Use your back button to return to the Navigation menu when you are done. Let me know if you have any problems.

Well, we had a stunning black filly after our 8-day miracle pregnancy! A textbook delivery, and a total paradigm shift at our little farm -- never thought we'd have a baby!

The drug treatment in months 7 and 8 had no ill effect, but looking up "teratogen" in the reference menu gave me a little shiver! There is so much information on this site. I'm in here every day!

Thanks,
Jerre
