How long should one wait for the placenta to be passed before calling the vet? We just had a beautiful buckskin paint foal born at 1:30 this morning and 9 hours later the mare still has not "cleaned" herself. The amniotic sack was a little thick and we had to break it but otherwise the birth was normal.

Thanks, Dr. O. We did administer Oxytocin and the mare passed the placenta withing 30 minutes. It appeared to be fully intact. We have given her antibiotics and are watching her closely for signs of toxemia.
