Hi! I have two foals, one is 4 months, an arab, the other is 2,5 months, a Paint.
Neither one is really shedding their foal coats! I see foals of my friends that are 2,5 months old and they are shedding like crazy! I dont see what I am doing wrong...??? They look and feel good, have been wormed very good from the get go, they get quality hay and feed. The Paint is inside at night, because her mom is shown, the arab is out.
The arab started a little when he was 6 weeks, then just seemed to stop, now he has started a little again, around his eyes (second time) and muzzle. The Paint filly hasnt done anything yet!

How can this be? Is there anything I can/should do???

Hoping someone can tell me, I'm getting a little worried..........

Hello Corine,
It is not unusual to have foals hold on their foal coats for 4 or 5 months. If after reviewing your management everything checks out OK, the foals look and act healthy, and the coat underneath looks good I would not worry about this, she will lose it soon.

Thank you DrO! I'll let you know when they do start shedding! The only thing I can think of is that at first I had them in at night, and as of about 3 weeks they are out at night, could that of stopped the shedding?
Glad to know there is nothing "wrong" with them or me doing anything wrong!

Corine,
My November foal didn't really lose the bulk of her foal coat until the last 2 or 3 weeks - and it was very hot here this June!

As it is, she still has a few odd foal coat hairs here and there and most of her "bison belly" hair. (She has these long thick hairs running down the center of her belly - head to tail. It reminds me of those photos of shaggy bison standing out in the snow with their belly hair hanging down to the ground!)

Like you I was getting a bit puzzled at her lack of shedding out but nature finally got 'round to it at 8 1/2 months. Now if she could just loose that bison belly hair!

Hello Corine,
Be careful, what I have said is that this is within the range of normal. Something I can never say from my computer screen is that your horse is OK. That requires a physical exam, in person. Yes changing the lighting patterns can really mess with shedding.
