Happy Monday all! What is the age of first heat? I was given a filly last December and the person who gave it to me didn't know her age or anything. This poor thing was just living in a stock trailer. Anyway, this past weekend she has come into heat, I'm sure it's her first as she is just slightly taller than my yearling who turned 1 April 18th. I'm just trying to get a close to accurate age for her. Thanks.

I don't think you're going to get an accurate age of this filly going by her first heat. It can vary a lot! Not only does their first heat vary normally, but the filly's general care, nutrition, even whether she's in with other mares that are coming into season all play a part as to when she will come in. A better way to tell her age would be by her teeth, imo.

That's what I figured, with her teeth..just was curious of their first cycle. She's not with any mares, she's with a 11 month old gelded colt.

Sara is right the onset of estrus is extremely variable, partially because the natural seasonality of the equine cycle is imposed over the aging process. Patricia go to Horse Care » Routine Horse Care » Aging Horses and Incisor Anatomy. By using the eruption of the baby and adult teeth you should be able to get within a few months of the age. DrO
