Posted on Sunday, Sep 28, 2003 - 5:10 am: Hi! I am wondering if anyone has had experience in breeding their mare with frozen semen.I plan on breeding next spring and am trying to get as much information as possible. I am in Europe and hope to be breeding to a US stallion. I hope someone can share their experience with me! |

However it still is a bit chancy as we have not yet been able to figure out all the reasons that sometimes the technique results in poor results. Most often it seems to be due to the ability of certain stallion's semen to freeze with our current techniques. These should be considered a minimum before you proceed, unless you like to conduct expensive experiments:1. A stallion that has a good record of being able to settle mares with frozen semen. 2. A experienced repro person on your side, to handle the semen and inseminate the mare. 3. A healthy mare with a good reproductive history. DrO |

As it will be costing quite a bit it may not be a bad idea to pick the stallion who has shipped frozen already. My mare has had one foal, she took on her first try, but was live covered. I have already been in touch with Select Breeders Service, they have a few labs here in Europe, I assume they will ben experienced? |

The thawing has to be done properly and brought to the right temperature carefully. The administration of the semen has to be right at ovulation for the mare. Determining ovulation is best done with ultrasound. Order semen to arrive within 24 hrs of ovulation, for best results. I hope this will give you some guide lines. There are breeders with 98% success rate using frozem semen, that is as good as most hand breeding and better than some of the top breeders hand breeding. |

The breeders have more than one stallion, but only the one has already proven himself to settle with frozen semen. Because of what you are both saying I am leaning toward the stallion who has settled before. I only have one mare and one chance, I would like to increase my chances as much as possible. |

I was considering breeding one of my mares this year with frozen semen (have never used frozen before) and he advised me against it due to my mare's age. She is 20. He told me that as a rule, frozen semen in older mares tends not to be a good choice. Not sure how old your mare is but if she's getting up there in age, it might be best to keep his advice in mind. Good luck! Sue |

Posted on Monday, Sep 29, 2003 - 12:24 pm: Hey, anyone know who is the best around Upper Marlboro Maryland who does frozen? I sent my last mare to the farm for breeding, but can't do that this time. I have used Dr. Stott and Runde in the past for vet stuff, but am not sure which is better, or if there is someone even better with the frozen around my area.TIA, Alicia |
