I have a mare that came as a rehab about 10 months ago. She was 'maybe' pregnant, but the vet palp'd her and said no. In the last couple weeks, she has suddenly grown to be very sensitive to being touched around her abdomen or midline behind the ribs. Normally she's been fine all over, now she will litterally kick or turn to bite. This has been about 80% of the time for the last 2 weeks. If I rub/work my way back/down, she tolerates it better. Sometimes she has spots that when rubbed make her moan out loud (she scared me the first time she did this!). Usually she is more sensitive on one side, but the side routinely shifts. She is not bagging up and she showed ALL signs of being in heat last summer. MY QUESTION is there any other problem that could be causing this sensitivity? Her food, energy, movements, etc all seem normal. She enjoys running/bucking with the group. This new sensitivity is her only 'symptom'. Also, two geldings in the group seem to have become more closely bonded to her in this time. I always find them standing very close or even crowded into a stall with her. (She doesn't appreciate this at all) If she is pregnant, when do you break them out from the herd? Is it okay to take a buddy with them or is that dangerous? Any advice would be appreciated. Kami

Kami, I have almost no experience with this, other than a "maiden" mare I bought at just barely age 3 who foaled 10 1/2 months later. I only figured it out 2 weeks before! But she became just as you describe, only not until the last 24 hours before foaling. She would threaten to bite if touched any farther back than her face. It was the only behavior change she showed. By then, though, she was bagged up and waxing and we'd seen the baby move. She'd also been "officially" declared pregnant with a palp 8 days before foaling.
