Should I be concerned about breeding my mare in September? We live in British Columbia.

Other than it means you would have an August or September foal, no. The opportune time to breed mares is in the spring. Usually by September they are getting ready for winter and their systems are starting to shut down. If she comes in heat, has a follicle and the stallion is willing and able you will probably get a foal. However, if you are breeding QTR horse, TB or Paint, it means that foal will be one year old on Jan. 1st following it's birth even if it is only 3 or 3 1/2 months old. If you are planning to show or race, you would be putting it to a disadvantage as it would have to compete with colts much older than it in the future. In that case, it would be better to wait until next spring. EO

IMO as per what EO said, I'd wait and put the mare under lights starting first part of Nov. and then breed her early next year. Even by August most mares are starting to be irregular in their cycles. To breed in Sept. you would probably have to manipulate the mare with hormones. Also, most stallions start "shutting down" by then too, and their semen isn't as potent. It will probably be much less effort and less costly to wait.

Thank you both for your advice. I think I'll wait, and breed her in the Spring! I'll just have to take my chances as the stallion is 26 years young! My pinto arabian is ten. Will be her first foal so don't want to leave it much longer.
