A friend of mine thinks her pregnant mares have been exposed to herpes virus type 4 - one of them is showing a runny nose and she is at day 293. Have you ever treated a mare for this? Will she be able to carry to term?

No we do not treat equine viral URT infections. Though antiviral drugs are available for humans they are of uncertain efficacy in these situations. It is possible this could cause an abortion but not certain, for more on this see Equine Diseases » Reproductive Diseases » Problems Keeping Mares Pregnant » Equine Herpes & Abortion.
