Posted on Tuesday, Apr 5, 2005 - 10:14 pm: I have a Thoroughbred mare who has been short cycled and refuses to DrOp her folicle. Here are the specifics of her case. She came to me with a 7day old foal. I began teasing her for her foal heat. She broke down on 3/11 and 3/12 (days 8 and 9 post foaling. I had her checked on 3/15 (day 12 post foaling) she had ovulated her foal heat folicle. On 3/19 she palped a R20 hard/medium. On 3/20 she palped a r30 medium with a 1 spec and and a so so tease. So we gave her a shot of prostin that evening. On 3/21 we gave her another shot of prostin. On 3/22 she palped a r40 medium and a spec of 2 with an edema of 2. She was bred on 3/23 and broke down at the shed. When she returned from the shed she was given Deslorelin. On 3/24 she still had the folicle so we gave her a shot of HCG. On 3/25 she still had the folicle. We doubled her on 3/26 and gave her another shot of Deslorelin. On 3/27 she was still holding on so we gave her another HCG shot. On 3/28 she began to regress to a 30 medium. Then on 3/30 to a 25 medium. We started her on thyro L, 2scps a day, and her folicle began to grow again. It progressed to a 45 soft but has yet to DrOp this folicle. My vet is testing her cortisol levels. Any thought as to what could be going on with this mare??trish |

It is early in the year for this type of procedure so we don't even try manipulating other than bringing them in to heat on a short cycle. Goes to show, the shots don't always work. We found that out too. Good luck. EO |

Last year decided to breed back same year and had the same scenario as you did this year. I did not try again as it was mid summer already. My vet told me some mares need a bit more time after foaling than others. |

A follicle comes up and does not ovulate, wellcome to early Spring. I question the use of thyroid hormone and cortisol studies in this case as presented above. Effective therapy for transitional behavior is a 14 day course of Regumate to help get her natural hormones built up and synchronized. Once pulled off I would expect a fairly normal though slightly prolonged cycle. DrO |
