We have two mares who are going to be inseminated this spring with frozen semen from a European stallion. We are going to be working with our local vet who has had success with frozen semen, but would like your input also re: mare preparation. You mention that cytology is more predictive than culture. What is the difference between cytology and uterine biopsy? We want to do this right and put the odds in our favor. Also, do we need to wait until the mare is in heat to do the cytology? Any help would be appreciated.

Hello Judy,
With cytology you do a swab to look at the cells on the surface of the uterus. I would recommend you do both a cytology and culture. We are beginning to see reports that have identified populations of mares with E coli infections that do not remarkable effect cytology's. They are saying that whether the E Coli is hemolytic or not does not differentiate whether it is a contaminant or not. Though this information is preliminary it is not unsupported by other work and we are considering a rewrite of the article reflecting this information.

With a biopsy you take a sample of the uterine wall itself and is considered the "gold standard" for diagnosing uterine problems. Cytology is looking for signs of intrauterine inflammation while biopsy is looking at the condition of the uterine lining and wall. Along with looking for signs of inflammation it also gives the condition of the uterus itself and its ability to establish and maintain pregnancy. For more on biopsy see HorseAdvice.com » Diseases of Horses » Reproductive Diseases » Trouble Settling Mares & Stallion Infertility » Endometrial Biopsy: Significance.
