I am breeding my 5 year old maiden mare on her next heat via live cover. I have been reading a few articles on the topic of breeding maiden mares to become more informed and prepared.

I was very surprised to read a couple of posts recommending breaking the hymen on a maiden mare prior to breeding. This was the first I have heard of this practice. It this necessary?? I am thinking this is NOT common practice or I would have heard about it. I read that it is possible that the hymen can be so thick that the stallion cannot penetrate the mare?? Wouldn't this be very rare and unusual?

HI Lauri,
Yes a hymen so thick it is difficult to break during normal breeding would be rare after all if common horses would not have perpetuated themselves. I must say however I have done it on occasion if I was there during a repo exam on a filly.
