My 21-year-old appendix mare might have been accidentally bred 3 weeks ago by an escaped stallion. Her vet and I agree that due to her age and recent health problems, as well as other practical considerations, if she is pregnant, we must, sadly, end it. Another vet is coming to do the testing in a few days. This vet is rather aggressive in her treatments, and I worry that she might suggest Lutalyse. The mare has only just come off a case of lymphangitis, which brought on a recurrence of her ulcers; then the breeding, which created some chest edema and a thigh hematoma and, of course, the ulcers. She is still being treated for those. While the mare cannot stay pregnant, if indeed she is, I am disinclined to go with the Lutalyse due to its powerful effect and this mare's recent history. I wonder what others think and what other possibilities there might be that I could discuss with this vet.

Hello Ellie, Though Lutalyse causes sweating and what appears to be a mild crampyness and even though there are warnings in the notes that come with the Lutalyse, these problems are very short lived and I don't think they represent a likely danger to the overall health of your horse. There is another PG2-a analog called Synchrocept that seems to have less of the sweating and cramps. I do not know of any safer, surer way to cause abortion at this stage. DrO
