Recently had a mare die after having this problem occur, every thing was done prior to sav
e the mare but the rupture was so severe that even with full veterinary attendance she was unable to be saved.
Would like some information regarding this problem (ie.,references, maybe)how to diagnose, what actually creates the problem, and the treatments and after-care measures that should be implemented.

Would be greatly appreciated, Chris.

Hello Chris,
My condolences on your mare. I am afraid this is a real act of god sort of thing. There are no predisposing causes that are proven though obesity and poor condition are frequently mentioned.

Diagnosis is straight forward: persistant post foaling colic that can range from mild to severe. Rising heart rate and gums that are becoming increasingly pale pretty much define this problem.

There are no straight forward treatments other than to make the mare comfortable and calm. Surgery to repair the problem has not improved survival. IV fluids are tricky as they may promote further bleeding. There has been a murmur about IV formaldehyde treatment but is still controversial I believe. Prognosis: guarded
