Discussion on Strep infection in the uterus

Hello Dr, We had our 14 yr old mare bred and have had a few problems. First, she had quite a bit of milky discharge. I took her into the vet and he said he didn't think she had an infection, some mares just have more discharge than others. He didn't want to do a scraping because it could endanger the forming pregnancy. She was bred May 18 thru May 22. Then on May 30 she was acting like she was in heat again, really strong. It was odd behavior for this mare, she is normally very quiet and I can hardly tell she is in heat. On June 6 I took her in for an ultrasound and they didn't find a pregnancy. At that time they did a cytology and found a strep infection. I have read the articles on this site so I have a question. At the time of the vets exam, she said the inside of the uterus looked pretty clean, the discharge has stopped. Now she is talking about antibiotics and flushing. My question is this. If strep is a normal part of a mares internal 'makeup', and there was no obvious sign of infection, what good would flushing and antibiotics do for this mare? How would it help, and is it really necessary?. Thank you, Julie

I think you are confusing culture and cytology. Read the article carefully and follow its links out for a thorough explanation. Strep can be either a contaminant or a pathogen and the cytology will help you decide which you have.
