Dr O,

I have a 10 yr old warmblood mare that seems to go into heat only once a year and always in the late fall. It is the only time that she shows any physical signs of being interested in the geldings in her pasture. There are no other signs at all the rest of the year. Is this an indication that she isnt fertile and would be difficult to get in foal? This is the first mare I have ever owned so I am not familiar at all with their cycles. I notice the other mares in the pasture turn into hussies all through the summer but not my mare???

It can be difficult to evaluate when most mares are cycling by the presence of geldings alone. It is more likely she is cycling but not showing signs during the summer, for more on this see the subtopic Mares Differ in Their Behavior When in Heat in the article associated with this discussion Breeding Patterns in Mares and Stallions. You can access it from the navigation bar at the top of this page.
