Discussion on What to look for in a top jumper prospect??
Author Message

Posted on Monday, Dec 17, 2001 - 6:03 pm:

I'm looking to change to jumpers after 9 years in the hunter ring and I want to buy a young horse that has potential to eventually show at 4ft6 or at least in classes that are 4ft+. I currently have a horse in mind but I'm `also looking around and I was wondering are there any certain things I should look for in a top jumper prospect?? any tips about what I'm looking for is greatly appreciated.

Thanks

There is a great article right now in Practical Horseman which directly addresses your question, check it out. Based on the article it sounds like a warmblood TB cross would be good. There is another article which discussed confirmation as well, which probably would be helpful to read in regards to the slope of the shoulder and shape of the croup.

I have a TB jumper, but I'm an ammy adult (3'6" and lower) so he's just great for what I do. But you may need something bigger.

Good Luck
