I have been responsible with the training of a sooon to be 3 y/o mare. The person that owns her says she has not been handled except to for vet, farrier and the moving her from stall to pasture. In my personal opinion she is no where near being trained under saddle due to lack of ground manners and training. I am currently trying to teach her to move away from the nudges i give her on her but and hip and she is doing great at that part. The main problem is she refuses to back in hand. I have tried everything. I give her a few taps on the chest and ask her to back but doing this causes her to nip. She seems to resent beign backed so I am working on this still but would like some extra advice.

Hi, Alisa,
I think what you are saying is that the horse isn't respecting your space, signals or pressure. There are probably lots of previous posts that will help you with different techniques for ground training. I will ask you, though:

When you are tapping the horse's chest and she nips, what is your response?

Will the horse move her hip or shoulder away from you with just your body language putting pressure on her, or only with physical pressure?

Thanks,
Holly

Well she respects my space overall and she will overall move away from me with body language. The main thing is no matter what I try she refuses to back when asked. Can't talk much now. Sorry. Comp problems.
