I own a 2yo filly I purchased to bring up for dressage. I have no plans to back her until she is three, and no plans to introduce basic collection until she is at least four; and apart from "couth training", i.e. leading, tying, foot handling, she's just running out with my husband's gelding and being young. What, if anything, do you more experienced trainers do with the youngstock you're grooming for dressage?

Hello Jan,
I like to ground drive young horses to get them use to the feel of the bridle and reins without the stress of lunging on the joints.

Thanks, Dr. O. I assume then that your youngster is bitted for ground driving. When do you introduce your youngsters to the bit?

Hello Jan,
When we start horses with ground driving we start them with the lines attached to the lower cheek rings of a Valhoma halter/bridle and without the bit and then later would introduce a bit. We do use a biting rig and I think it is a great introduction for the horse to pressure around the girth. It is very easy to attach the bit later to the halter/bridle without a lot of fussing with gettting the bit in the mouth as the head stall goes on.
