I cut my first cow last night! I was at a clinic to teach newbies like me how to cut cows for team penning. They wanted me to go slow into the herd, pick a cow and cut him out. The first time was perfect. (My guy knows how, I do not!). I was able to do two more, but these cows were too easy because they didn't really want to move so I would change to cows that did. The cows that moved fast kept getting back to the herd. But my guy loves this (and he's used to going fast because my friend rides him in team penning) and for the rest of the cows he wanted to trot and jig, so I was trying to hold him back(he wears a snaffle) ... They told me to let go of his head, but when I did he would go fast and they'd tell me to slow him down...Any suggestions or tips? The person that started us out in the clinic was great and gave us good instruction, but then another person came and didn't really give any instruction. I want to do him justice and let him have some fun!!

Gosh that sounds like a blast! Maybe there's a different signal for stopping cutting horses, like relaxing your seat. You should ask your friend.

I'm by no means an expert on this subject, but in cutting events, you do give the horse his head. The cues are given by how you sit as well as your legs. Most of the time your hands are used to hold on. It is a thrill- infact some say the most fun you can have horseback. Jim
