Discussion on Training a mini yearling
Author Message

Posted on Friday, Jul 12, 2002 - 12:47 pm:

I have been lightly lungeing my miniature yearling colt. I was wondering what exercise amount was too much. I generally lunge him w/t for about 15 mintues and it seems to barely affect him. I really would like to get him into good condition and was wondering what would be too much on him since he is a yearling.
Thanks

Hello Edward,
To be honest, I do not know what might be acceptable to the minis anatomy and physiology. If done under speed this would be considered excessive in my opinion for yearlings of the larger breeds but mini's are inherently sturdier and have less stress on the joints. I know of no studies on this and we have lots of mini owners and trainers on the site maybe they could give us some practical advice.

It is not just the amount of time each day, or the type work, but a lot depends on how the days of work are put together. We have some important training principles that cover this and other details that can be found at Training Horses: Body Conditioning: Exercise Physiology and Conditioning.
