Ok, this is weird. I have a 10 yr TB Gelding. He's an odd little boy to begin with, partially from how he was handled in his past life (not physically abused, just pushed too quickly as a youngster) but mostly thats just him. His latest quirk is that while grazing, he will DrOp to his front knees and start pulling at the ground. While doing this he makes this odd grunt/growl noise...like when a dog is playing with a sock or a rope during tug-o-war. The first time it happened it scared me to death. All I could hear was the noise and see his rear end in the air and I thought his leg was in a groundhog hole! Anyway, when I have walked out to him (and when he hasn't gotten up and run away) it looks like he is pulling up weeds/wild onions. So, my thoughts are that he is looking for something that is missing in his diet; he has discovered a new way to windsuck (although he never has before and the grunt is different from a windsuck); or he has found a new way to amuse himself. I'd love to hear your thoughts.

Too funny, nancy. Reminds me of the time I first saw a horse trying to scratch its midline during bug season. My sister's old pinto mare was standing over a thick weed stalk and was see-sawing back and forth over it with her legs spread . . . and I looked out and saw her and panicked, thinking she was impaled on a stick and couldn't imagine how that had happened. I've never seen a horse do what you describe your horse doing . . . so I can't add any enlightenment . . . Welcome to HA.
