Discussion on Fitting saddle to an arabian
Author Message

Posted on Saturday, Sep 18, 1999 - 10:41 am:

I am having a difficult time finding an english saddle (all purpose) that does not press tightly on the sides of my arab's withers. This horse has very low withers. I have been advised by one trainer that I should purchase a wide saddle. At one tack shop I was told that would make the problem worse and all I could do I use a thick pad. Is anyone having success with the Wintex saddles with adjustible trees? What type of tree is best for a horse with very low withers? Thank you!!

Elizabeth,
I had the same problem with my Arabian, and I solved it by getting a saddle with a wide tree. Putting a thicker pad with a saddle that was too narrow did not help. If anything it made matters worse. My mare had muscle spasms on both sides of her withers where the saddle pressed too tight. Since going to a wider tree, I haven't had a problem (four years). As far as a brand of saddle, I hava an Albion (dressage saddle) and it has a wide tree. There are some brands that rate the width by numbers, I think. Your tack shop should be able to help with that.
Good luck, Kathleen
