At my new barn the tack room is unheated. They have a space heater but it is on only when people are there, riding, using the tack room. We are in New Jersey, and it's been pretty cold lately--down in the teens and single digits at night. My question is, is cold weather harmful to leather tack? I just got a new saddle and sure don't want it damaged by temperature extremes.

As long as the other parameters remain acceptable the temperatures should be OK. One problem I see is the episodic periods of warmer air, which may allow condensation to form on the cooler leather, leading to mold and mildew. So watch for these conditions and otherwise you should be OK. Then again I am not a leather expert, maybe I have been abusing my leather tack for decades now.

I don't have a problem with cold affecting my leather. I have more of a problem here in Tn with hot weather making stuff mold! Of course, if I had a $2000 saddle, it would be in bed with me!
