Posted on Wednesday, Aug 13, 2003 - 10:29 am: I have a 2 yr old gelding, who when taken out of his normal enviorment, taking him to different barns where there is alot of activity, boarding barns, he rears, I have a small back yard place, with 3 other horses,He's not a "hot" horse, but tends to worry a bit, we can take him to a friends place where its about the same level of activity as home and he is just fine. My question is: he is to be my next show horse. I have raised him as a baby. Is this just "age" related? Or could it become a issue as he gets older? Thanks for any info on this, just worried ahead of time. |

Posted on Wednesday, Aug 13, 2003 - 10:54 am: boy oh boy can i relate to your question... i posted the same very thing about 6 months or more ago... my filly, then was about 18/20 months old and growing very tall...i raised her like all the others, handled her, tied her, clipped her, trailered her... BUT she became a rearing fool all of a sudden.. in fact i had to bring her in from pasture with a lunge line so that i had enough feed to let her go up and ME get out of the way... i tried most everything as the post says... i don't know but now she is the sweetest filly, like before... was she going thru the terrible twos..? was it the growth spurt that made her THINK BIG?.. i have no clue why she started it or why it no longer is an issue...i just stayed consistent with what i did with her.. never got to nervous or upset by her rearing but stayed safe..!! i was working with her daily, as of now tho with her bulbous nose condition i have given her a break and am slightly worried about that... i think being consistent with her was the key., and hope that this break while her nose heals will NOT be a set back.. good luck.. and hopefully this soon shall pass Ann |

Posted on Thursday, Aug 14, 2003 - 9:20 am: Thanks for the response. Well he does'nt do it often, I'm just concerned that it might turn in to a pattern, which I dont want. When he rears, hes always in surrrondings where there is alot of activity, busy boarding barn, then when we took hin to approvals, lots of people and horses, trailers etc. any different enviorment then what he is use too. Most of the time, he takes me by supprise, he doesnt seem to be excited at the time, trying to run or cant stand still, he will look, and all of a sudden he will rear. Most of the time displine is just a harsh word to him, I'm not sure if that is right, but he is only 2 and dont want to start something if its just a growing issue. The only thing I can think of, is maybe I need to expose him more to different things, He tends to worry, and at times think "things" will hurt him i.e. bug mask for the summer, he thought for sure he was a gonner, to have that on his face! Thanks alot. |
